What is Legal Expense Insurance?

LEI is not liability insurance. It provides affordable coverage for the legal fees and expenses incurred by a lawyer for matters covered by the policy. These matters are not generally covered by professional or commercial liability insurance. In addition, LEI holders have access to a toll-free Telephone Legal Advisory service. This service provides unlimited, instant access to a lawyer whenever immediate advice is needed.

Who needs Legal Advice?

Statistically, 1 in 3 Canadians over the age of 19 will need legal advice at least once a year. Unfortunately, the enormous cost of legal fees makes access to justice prohibitive. Only 3.4% of those who need legal advice can afford more than two hours of a lawyer’s time.

STERLON Underwriting Managers Ltd. is managed by Kevin Le Messurier-Girling and Victoria Girling who introduced Legal Expense Insurance to Canada in the summer of 1990.

Kevin has over 28 years experience in insurance, much of it spent specializing in Legal Expense Insurance coverage and claims administration. After working for various Lloyd's brokers in the U.K., Kevin then spent a number of years adjusting claims at Lloyd's. In 1990, as Executive Vice President of The Legal Protection Group (Canada) Ltd., he was instrumental in introducing Legal Expense Insurance to Canada and has been developing and marketing the concept since that date, currently as President of STERLON Underwriting Managers Ltd. Kevin holds a loss adjusting license specific to Legal Expense Insurance. He works closely with insurance regulators, both at the Provincial and Federal level, to ensure the smooth evolution of Legal Expense Insurance in Canada. He has developed close relations with a number of insurance brokers and associations to increase market awareness of all products. Kevin also oversees the development of proprietary software exclusive to the management of Legal Expense Insurance and Telephone Legal Advisory Service delivery which is available to over one million Canadians.

Victoria is a lawyer with more than 18 years experience in the area of Legal Expense Insurance. Before assisting in launching the first legal expense insurance product in Canada in 1990, Victoria worked for two years as counsel with The Legal Protection Group (U.K.), an English company specializing in this field of insurance. She has experience in claims handling and product development and is a Licensed Loss Adjuster for Legal Expense Insurance. She has special responsibility for liaising with regulatory authorities, both at the Federal and Provincial level, as well as Law Societies and Bar Associations. Victoria is a law graduate from Southampton University, England. Victoria is responsible for developing the final wording for all Legal Expense Insurance Products underwritten for STERLON Underwriting Managers Ltd. by Lloyds of London and other world-class insurance companies. She also develops and monitors the panel law firms, which provide service to insureds under the various Legal Expense Insurance programs.
